Business Groups Press Congress on Miscellaneous Tariff Bill

In a Jan. 28 letter to the House Ways and Means Committee and the Senate Finance Committee, eight leading business groups, including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the National Association of Manufacturers, asked that the Miscellaneous Tariff Bill (MTB) be renewed retroactively, as it expired on Dec. 31, 2009. A MTB (H.R. 4380) was introduced at the end of last year and is expected to move early this year.

The MTB would support U.S. manufacturing by either suspending or reducing tariffs on many imported products not produced in the U.S., which are ultimately used in the manufacturing process. The groups asked that the legislation be passed in a retroactive manner to "preserve the business cost-savings intended by the MTB and provide manufacturers with the consistency needed to implement their business plans successfully."
