Cummins Agrees to $2.1 Million Settlement in Clean Air Act Violation
March 1, 2010 - It was announced on Feb. 22 that Cummins Inc. will pay $2.1 million to resolve a civil compliant filed by the federal government that they sold heavy-duty diesel engines that did not comply with Clean Air Act standards. Under the settlement agreement, the engine manufacturers will recall 405 heavy duty diesel engines to install after treatment devices including catalytic converters and diesel particulate filters. The company must also retire emission credits to offset the 167.1 tons of nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons and 30 tons of particulates that were emitted by the non-complying engines. The settlement involves sale of 570,000 heavy-duty diesel engines between 1998 and 2006 and is now subject to a 30-day comment period.
